Detour
The next iteration of "Hit-n-Run" aims to empower young individuals to lead healthier, happier lives
Detour is a smart distraction tool that is customized to encourage play when the user is likely to have an urge to smoke. In game, players experience support and guidance by expert tips, goal setting, motivational messaging, and just-in-time interventions.
Around the game lives a social shell on Instagram and TikTok filled with screened users trying to quit smoking and psychologists that offer moral support through tips, life hacks, stories, and challenges.
I took on a pivotal role in the development of Detour, a project aimed at expanding upon the therapeutic successes of Hit-n-Run while introducing new cooperative and personalized features. A key project objective was to build a just-in-time intervention around the core gameplay without altering therapeutic experiences that made Hit-n-Run effective.
Beyond game design, my responsibilities included comprehensive product planning, development management, stakeholder engagement, and consulting on the game’s integration into Radboud University's larger smoking intervention study.
