ALIEN HEALTH
An exercise game to teach youth about macro-nutrition in common foods
Alien Health is a Kinect One PC game that uses embodied motion to select foods for a malnourished alien. Choosing the right food to feed the alien increases its mood and gives it energy to pilot a BioShip, choosing the better food increases its performance.
In a pilot study conducted in the Limburg Province of The Netherlands, students at schools played Alien Health and had better short-term knowledge of the five most important macronutrients of foods, and were better able to distinguish the healthier food item out of two options over time.
ASU Obesity Solutions Challenge winner
I led the art direction and co-designed the game during my role as Art Director at Embodied-Games Lab at Arizona State University. The challenge was to develop a cohesive visual style that effectively communicated and supported the game’s educational goals and classroom utility. Designed to help players make rapid food choices while in a classroom setting, teach them about five key nutrients in common foods, and foster discussion on what makes a food healthier among classmates.
